IBS can make life very small, very quickly.
One day the tummy is fine, the next day it’s cramps, bloating, rushing to the loo, or the opposite — nothing moving. You start planning your day around toilets, routes, and whether you can trust your digestion. Add worry on top of that… and the bowel gets even tighter.
Here’s the bit most people don’t get told: IBS is strongly linked to the nervous system.
When the mind is anxious, busy, or holding old emotion, the gut usually joins in. That’s why it flares with stress, rows, travel, grief, exams, or even good excitement.
So if the gut is listening to the mind… let’s talk to the mind.

What IBS looks like
You don’t have to have all of these, but this is the usual mix:
Cramping or twisting feeling in the lower tummy
Bloating, “pregnant” feeling by evening
Alternating diarrhoea and constipation
Urgent bowels when stressed or going out
Lots of gas / noisy tummy
Feeling “not emptied”
Worry about accidents or not getting to a loo in time
IBS worse when anxious
Very often people have had tests and been told: “It’s IBS.”
Which is medical code for: “Nothing serious, but it’s still annoying.”
That’s exactly where hypnotherapy fits.
Why hypnotherapy helps IBS
The gut and the brain talk to each other all day long (they call it the gut–brain axis, but we don’t need to get fancy). If the brain keeps sending “I’m not safe” messages, the gut replies with tension, spasms, and urgency.
So we work on the message, not just the symptom.
From the analytical view we’ve been using for your other pages:
IBS is often an outward expression of an internal anxiety.
The tummy is simply where you “do” your stress.
That means if we calm the mind and clear the stored emotion at the back of it, the gut usually settles.
Two ways I treat IBS with hypnotherapy
1. Suggestion / Clinical Hypnosis (symptom relief)
This is lovely, gentle work. You’re guided into a calm state, and I give your mind and gut very specific suggestions, such as:
“Your digestion is smooth and calm.”
“Your bowel responds at the right time, not the wrong time.”
“Your tummy is relaxed in social situations.”
“You trust your body.”
This helps reduce flare-ups, calms the spasm, and — this is big — reduces the fear of the next episode. For some people that’s all they need. Often 2–4 sessions.
2. Analytical Hypnotherapy / Pure Hypnoanalysis (cause removal)
This is for the long-standing IBS — the kind you’ve had for years, that arrived after a stressful period, or that goes up and down with emotions and relationships.
In those cases, the bowel is doing a job: it’s expressing what never got said or felt.
Analytical hypnotherapy lets that bottled-up / repressed emotion come up and release over 8–12 weekly sessions.
When the emotional load drops… the gut stops shouting.
And, same as always: I never charge for more than 12 sessions.
That’s the difference between “I can manage it” and “I rarely get it now.”
IBS and anxiety – the loop
A lot of IBS sufferers tell me this:
My stomach plays up →
I get anxious about it →
Anxiety makes it worse →
Now I’m watching my stomach all day →
Now I don’t want to go out
Hypnotherapy breaks that loop in two places:
we calm the gut
we calm the watching and worrying part of the mind
Once you’re not afraid of the symptoms, they usually reduce.
